In 2013, the City of Ottawa awarded the contract to design, build, finance and maintain the Confederation Line to the Rideau Transit Group.
The Rideau Transit Group (RTG) is made up of ACS Canada Infrastructure, EllisDon and SNC-Lavalin.
In recent years, RTG has also hired the services of the following firms: Adamson & Associates Architects, Alstom, Dragados Canada Inc., Dr. Sauer & Partners Corporation, BBB Architects, Fast + Epp, Hatch Mott Macdonald, IBI Group, MMM Group, Sereca Fire Consulting Ltd., Scotia Capital and Thurber Engineering Ltd.
RTM stands for Rideau Transit Maintenance. RTM is an arm of RTG.
RTM is responsible for maintaining and rehabilitating the LRT system. RTM works 24 hours a day maintaining the LRT system doing a wide variety of maintenance duties, such as cleaning of the trains and maintenance of the LRT stations. RTM is contracted to maintain the line until 2048.
The City has bought 17 trains. As Ottawa and ridership grows, the system will be able to expand. Right now, full service uses 13 trains.
Safety and reliability are our number one priority. We have a dedicated workforce that works 24 hours a day maintaining the system. The team is supported by external suppliers specialized in various areas of the system equipment to provide and carry out all necessary preventative maintenance activities and rehabilitation.
The Trillium Line and the Confederation Line are two different systems and the way that they operate is different. Additionally, with any new LRT system, there is a “breaking in” phase where kinks and issues in the system are worked out and maintenance frequency is adjusted to fit the needs of the system and its environment.
Escalators and elevators are part of RTM’s responsibility to regularly maintain. Maintenance work is done according to an approved maintenance protocol and timetable.
Replacing bus and car trips with the LRT’s zero emission electric trains, means reducing carbon dioxide by approximately 94,000 tonnes per year by 2031.
Light rail vehicles are significantly quieter than diesel-powered buses. Replacing buses with light rail, plus an underground downtown corridor, means a reduction in both air and noise pollution.
RTG has taken significant precautions in order to limit risk to employees and the public. In response to the pandemic, we have implemented a rigorous daily deep clean of all vehicles. Stations undergo enhanced daily cleaning with a focus on key touch points (doors, buttons, fare gates, elevators/escalators, etc.). We have reviewed all cleaning products to confirm effectiveness against the COVID-19 virus. The MSF undergoes enhanced daily cleaning with a focus on key touch points (elevator, washrooms, kitchens, common areas, etc.)
Additionally, RTG and RTM are in close contact with the City of Ottawa and we are constantly assessing protocols as the covid-19 outbreak evolves. We continue to follow the lead of Ottawa Public Health with respect to appropriate actions, and we are doing everything we can to ensure the health and safety of our employees and partners.
